This should be a post where I introduce myself and why I'm here.
I don't really feel like doing that.
If you found me via Twitter, you probably already know enough.
Does this mean I get to rant now?
I want to rant about the state of the world. About the state of America and this state in which I find myself. I want to rant about how politicians don't listen to the people who sign their checks anymore (that's us little folx). About how politicians vote on party lines rather than for things that matter, things like decency, standards, ideals, and yes, even idealism. (Because really, what's the point in making the world a better place - something most conservatives are staunchly against - if you don't have hope?) I'm talking about politicians of all stripes standing up and saying, "No, we do not need another war in the Middle East. Cancel tRump."
I'm talking about politicians at all levels of government taking a stand and making changes to mitigate the damage we are causing to our Earth, the only planet we know is capable of sustaining life. (We can't even reach ANY other exoplanets at all, yet, so why the fuck are we throwing away what we have. For all we know, we're on the only planet that is capable of sustaining life - in the entire universe - and we need to show some goddamn respect to the penultimate life-giver and sustainer: our Earth. Feminize it and call it Mother Earth, whatever it takes to grant it the status it deserves.
Our Earth is so unique, but either no one cares because they're too busy distracting themselves from the flaming dumpster that has become our current state of affairs or they willfully ignore all the signs that climate science has been pointing to for decades: climate change (global warming) is here and it's a motherfucking doozy. If you somehow still don't get it, sit down, shut the fuck up, and open your eyes. Read from reputable sources (like BBC, NASA, etc, etc.). Listen to NPR. There are so many sources of scientific news. Fox is not one of them. Nor is Breitbart. Stop falling prey to misinformation campaigns that aim to keep you permanently stupified or else so distracted that you fail to notice when it's your own house that's on fire. (Here's this: https://www.livescience.com/evolution-says-humans-only-intelligent-life.html)
And speaking of fire, holy shit. I'm terrified for Australia and so wounded by the damage this is doing to their delicate ecosystems. Species may end up going extinct as a result of this one cluster of wildfires. See: https://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2020/1/9/21057375/australia-fire-wildlife-extinctions-ecology Extinction - especially of unique species that coexist in a delicate balance of biodiversity - is not only devastating but completely inexcusable in 2020. There is no reason we should be letting this happen. There is no reason we're not yet planning for these events. The loss of human life is tragic, too, of course, but it pales in comparison to the loss of all the lives of existing species, species that will be forever lost, becoming mere footnotes in history. I have friends in Australia but I'm not as worried for them as I am for the last surviving marsupials, for instance (but fuck those nightmare-spiders).
My husband and I had an interesting conversation last night. I brought up this article I read yesterday (which you can find here: https://www.livescience.com/will-we-ever-live-exoplanet.html Yeah, I've been on that site a bunch thanks to Google News and Assistant reading my goddamn mind.) The gist of the article seems pretty basic; a Nobel Laureate says we should stop wasting time fantasizing about living on other planets because a) the facts do not support this possibility and b) we seriously need to buckle down and stop fucking up the only planet we've got. G (hubby) was not at all happy about that article. (He didn't read it, he was just going off of what he gleaned from our conversation.) He said that kind of thinking is bad, too, for different reasons. One reason is that by looking at space and exploring the cosmos as best we can, we can find solutions to things like climate change. Examples of that could be Mars and Venus, two planets that might have been capable of life at one point. (Conversely, anti-science nuts could say something along the lines of, "Venus was enveloped by greenhouse gases naturally. See? There's nothing we can do. Climate change is inevitable and a natural occurrence" [and yeah, I cringed so hard as I typed that].)
There's never a good excuse for anti-intellectualism, anti-science, anti-education extremism. There are reasons for those perspectives that are even more nefarious than they might seem at first glance. It's not just because they're uneducated and want to pass that on (which, in itself, is downright evil) but more like a ploy, a fast lane to a fascist government. An easily controllable population is always a boon to politicians who win unfairly and consistently vote in ways that harm their constituents, meanwhile raking in obscene profit levels.
And, I think that's all the rant I have within me for now. G came home so I had to put up groceries and do some cleaning and now I'm just... done. As I am so often these days. I'm tired. I'm so tired of all this bullshit and I have no outlet, nothing I can do. I can vent. I can rant. And for now, despite the fact that I know no one is ever going to read this, that's enough. For now.
